Chapter 1 - The Hand She Stopped

“If you raise your hand again, I will stop you again.”

Nobody in the Caldwell mansion moved. Madison Caldwell's wrist hung between her and the new housekeeper, who had released it as soon as the threat passed.

“You grabbed me,” Madison said.

“You tried to hit me.”

“You touched my shoes.”

“I moved them to clean the floor. That was my mistake. Hitting me would be yours.”

Nora Hayes bent to collect her rag. She had arrived from Arkansas with one suitcase and forty-three dollars. The monthly pay would cover nursing-school tuition if she kept this job a full year. She had barely lasted forty minutes.

Madison's eyes narrowed. “You won't last until lunch.”

“Then I guess lunch will be interesting.”

Behind them, Margaret Ellis, the house manager, made a sound like a swallowed cough. Madison stormed upstairs, leaving an expensive scent and a silence that felt just as heavy.

“Please tell me you have another job,” Margaret whispered.

“No, ma'am.”

“Then learn one thing fast. In this house, being right doesn't keep you employed.”

Nora glanced toward the grand staircase. “Maybe somebody should try it anyway.”

The mansion had fourteen bedrooms, a movie theater, and a hallway long enough to lose a person. At home, Grandma Ruth stretched soup with potatoes. Nora couldn't afford pride. But she couldn't rent out her dignity either.

She returned the shoes to their exact places. Then a porcelain cup shattered above her.

At the landing, Elaine Caldwell, the billionaire's wife, gripped the railing. Her mouth moved, but only half a sentence came out. One side of her face seemed slack.

“Mrs. Caldwell?” Nora called.

Madison hurried from her bedroom. “Mom, you're embarrassing yourself.”

Elaine tried to speak again. Her knees folded.

Nora caught her before her head struck the stair.

“Margaret, call 911. Tell them possible stroke. Tell them when she was last acting normally.”

Madison reached for the phone. “Our private physician handles everything.”

“Not this. Please move.”

Elaine's fingers closed around Nora's sleeve with startling strength.

“Don't,” she breathed, “let Graham take the blue folder.”

Then her eyes closed.
