I Came Home After Two Weeks and Found My Little Girl Shielding Her Weak Brother on the Floor—Then She Whispered, “Daddy, Mommy Said No One Would Believe Us.”
I Came Home Early and Found My 7-Year-Old Daughter Dragging Her Little Brother Across the Floor—Then She Revealed What Mommy Had Been Hiding!
“DADDY… I TRIED TO PROTECT HIM. PLEASE DON'T BE MAD AT ME.”
Those were the first words my seven-year-old daughter whispered when I walked through our front door after twelve days away.
I dropped my suitcase.
MY LITTLE GIRL WAS DRAGGING HER THREE-YEAR-OLD BROTHER ACROSS THE HARDWOOD FLOOR.
Her knees were scraped raw. Her tiny arms were trembling. Tommy lay helplessly beside her, burning with fever.
Neither child had enough strength to stand.
“Lily, sweetheart… what happened? Where's Mommy?”
She covered her little brother's ear and whispered:
“She told us to stay quiet, Daddy. We weren't supposed to tell anyone.”
My heart nearly stopped.
I'd spent twelve days working away from home, believing my children were safe with their mother.
Every night, my wife, Mara, had texted me:
“Everything's fine. The kids are asleep.”
SHE HAD BEEN LYING.
I called 911 immediately.
As the paramedics carried Tommy toward the ambulance, Lily clung to my shirt and began sobbing.
“Daddy… I thought you forgot us.”
I held her close.
“Never, baby. Daddy would never forget you.”
But just as we were leaving, Lily suddenly pointed toward a locked door at the end of the hallway.
The room Mara had always called storage.
Her next words sent a chill down my spine.
“Daddy… Mommy said I wasn't supposed to tell you about that room.”
I knelt beside her.
“What happened in there, sweetheart?”
Lily started shaking.
“THAT'S WHERE MOMMY MADE US PRACTICE BEING CHILDREN WHOSE DADDY NEVER COMES HOME.”
I couldn't move.
What had my wife been planning while I was away?
Why had she forced our children to practice living without me?
And what was waiting behind that locked door?
I thought finding my children on the floor was the worst moment of my life.
