Chapter 2 - The Words She Rehearsed

At Wake County Children's Hospital, a nurse wrapped Lily in a blanket decorated with green turtles. Tommy lay under a thin sheet while a doctor assessed his fever and dehydration. They were treating him while checking for infection.

I stood beside his bed, staring at the little paper band around his wrist. Twelve days ago he'd chased my taxi down the driveway yelling, "Bring me a plane!" Now he barely opened his eyes.

Dr. Meera Shah asked when they had last eaten a full meal. I didn't know. That answer shamed me more than anything I had ever said aloud.

"We need an accurate account," she said, not unkindly. "Not a perfect one."

I showed her the texts from Mara. They read like ordinary family updates. In one, Mara had attached a photo of cereal bowls on the counter. The children weren't in the picture.

Lily watched me scroll. "Mommy said you'd like that one."

"Did she take it today?"

"No. She made the bowls when the camera man came."

I stopped. "What camera man?"

The nurse touched my arm. "Let's not make Lily tell the whole story right now. A child specialist will speak with her when she's ready."

Lily pulled her blanket up to her chin. "I didn't say the words right. That's why Mommy got mad."

I knelt beside her chair. "None of this is because you said something wrong."

She looked unconvinced. That was the worst part. Someone had taught my daughter to distrust a plain, loving sentence.

A hospital social worker, Carmen Lee, joined us. I told her the children had been unattended when I arrived and that my wife was missing. She explained the hospital's duty to report possible neglect. I gave her every number Mara used.

Just after midnight, Tommy stirred. He reached for me and whispered, "No lights."

I brushed the damp hair off his forehead. "What lights, buddy?"

"The big white lights. Mommy said cry."

My phone vibrated. Mara's number finally appeared, along with one sentence.

Don't let them talk to anyone. You don't understand what they'll say.
