Chapter 17 - The Truth Under Oath

I nearly posted a public denial. Anita stopped me with a single question: "Who would that help more, you or Lily?"
Instead, I gave a formal statement and returned to being a father. I packed lunches, found the missing sneaker under Tommy's bed, and sat through a school meeting about how to help Lily feel safe in class.
The investigation moved while our routines went on. Records obtained from Quiet Harbor Media showed that Mara had approved scripts and payments. Nolan had altered clips and pressured her to keep filming, but the original ideas, including the lie that I'd abandoned the children, had appeared in messages Mara wrote months before he joined the project.
When prosecutors filed charges related to fraud and child neglect, Mara asked whether I would support a lighter sentence. I told her attorney that my statement would be truthful and that the court would decide what followed. I would not bargain with the children's pain.
At a hearing, the judge reviewed the evidence and set conditions limiting contact. Our separate family-court case remained focused on the children's safety, not on punishing Mara twice.
Nolan entered a plea of not guilty and contested the financial allegations. Months of legal work still lay ahead. A charge was not a conviction; an order was not healing.
Afterward, Mara saw me in the corridor. She didn't come closer. "Tell Lily I didn't mean to make her afraid," she said.
"She doesn't need a message that makes her comfort you," I replied. "She needs you to accept what you did."
Mara lowered her head. For once she didn't argue.
That night, Lily sat beside me while I read a story. She stopped me halfway through.
"Daddy, if Mommy says she's sorry, do I have to say it's okay?"
"No," I said. "You can decide how you feel."

Lily turned the page herself. "Then I don't know yet."
The uncertainty was hers to own.
