Chapter 13 - The Door with No Window

Doc read the threat in silence. Then she said, "Good. They put it in writing."

She meant it. She forwarded the message to Rowan and Shaw, requested the records-office entry logs, and asked for a second staff member whenever she accessed the clinic after hours. She wasn't fearless. Her fingers shook while she did it.

"You're not doing this alone," I told her.

"That's what I've been telling you for three days."

Colonel Shaw ordered Miller removed from all duties involving personnel files, training evaluations, and parade rehearsals while the investigation continued. He was directed not to contact witnesses. Rusk was separately relieved of supervisory responsibilities. The wheels of accountability were turning, slowly but at last in the right direction.

Miller didn't take it quietly. He walked into Shaw's office wearing a smile that didn't reach his eyes. I heard the raised voices through the hall.

"My father served this Army for thirty-two years," Miller said.

"Then he should have taught you what an order is for," Shaw replied.

Miller emerged, saw me sitting with my brace, and stepped close enough that I could smell the mint on his breath. "You'll spend the rest of your career explaining why you destroyed mine."

I didn't answer. A military police officer at the end of the hall had heard him.

That evening Rowan informed us the original camera recording had been recovered from a secondary backup. It showed the first strike clearly, including my empty hands and Lowell trying to step between us. Park had made the evidence copy before anyone could erase it.

"There's one other discovery," Rowan said. "The medical clearance didn't come from Doc's workstation. It came from Miller's office printer terminal."

The machine had recorded who signed in.

Brad Miller wasn't the user.
