Chapter 14 - The Lie About the Matches

The second security worker was named Darrell Pike. He had left the foundation after Juniper House burned and gone to work loading trucks overnight. Investigators located him through payroll records; Sonia made clear that I wasn't to approach him myself.

Then Beatrice released a statement claiming Noah had played with matches near the laundry room. She called it a tragic childhood mistake. She didn't say a single word about a chained exit.

I saw the statement on my phone while making lunch. My hands shook so badly I spilled soup across the counter. Noah didn't know what had been said. I put the phone away, took a moment in the hallway, and came back with an ordinary voice.

"What's wrong?" he asked.

"An adult said something untrue. Other adults are checking the facts. You don't need to fix it."

"I didn't have matches," he said. "Mom said we never touch them."

"I know."

The retired fire investigator, Lewis Trent, made the facts clear in a recorded interview released through his attorney. The ignition point had been a faulty electrical connection behind an industrial dryer, nowhere near the children's rooms. The official report had never suggested a child started the fire. Trent said the new allegation was inconsistent with physical evidence collected that night.

Public opinion began to shift. Families from both residences came forward with photographs of blocked exits and unanswered repair requests. A local reporter named Mina Chen connected those accounts to the foundation's budget transfers. She never asked Noah to appear on camera.

That evening, Darrell Pike gave investigators his first recorded interview. He admitted he'd secured the west exit on Rusk's instructions and said the chain was left in place because a delivery of valuable equipment was expected after hours. He also admitted he had never been trained to remove it in an emergency.

The last line of his statement stunned us: "When I tried to tell the foundation what happened, somebody offered me money to say the chain had already been taken off."
