Chapter 15 - Find the One Who's Missing

The bus groaned as passengers scrambled through the uphill door. Holt and the MPs guided them away from the unstable crossing. Marcus fought his way toward the rear, every step sending a bright spike of pain through his bad leg.
"Marcus, stay back!" Ortiz called.
"That kid can't reach the exit!"
Viper slipped through the open door ahead of him. Inside, a twelve-year-old actor named Owen crouched between two seats, frozen with fear. He had dropped his glasses and couldn't see where the others went.
"Look at me," Marcus said. "I'm Marcus. That's Viper. We're getting you out."
"The floor's moving," Owen whispered.
"Then we'll move first."
Viper pushed his muzzle beneath the boy's trembling hand. Owen gripped his collar. Marcus guided them down the aisle, using the seat backs instead of his crutches. When the bus lurched, Viper braced beside the boy and refused to leave him.
Brooks reached through the doorway. "Hand him to me!"
Together they got Owen onto solid ground. Marcus followed just as the rear wheels slipped. The bus tipped sideways into the wash with a scream of metal. Dust engulfed the crossing.
Nobody had been inside when it fell.
Owen wrapped both arms around Viper. "He wasn't scared," the boy said.
Marcus looked at the dog. "He was. That's what makes him brave."
June's voice crackled over Ortiz's radio. "We found why the vehicles kept going. Someone logged a second clearance using Rusk's office credentials. I've saved the transaction record."
But Northgate's final support truck had turned away during the rescue. Holt spotted a man carrying the black archive case from the passenger side into a smaller utility vehicle.
"That's Vale's security chief," Holt said.
The vehicle accelerated toward Hangar Four.
Marcus's relief vanished. The people were safe, but the one thing that could prove what really happened to Danny was racing toward destruction.

"They're taking the evidence," he said.
Viper stood, shook the dust from his coat, and pulled toward the fleeing truck.
