Chapter 8 - The Sister Nobody Mentioned

I called Rachel with shaking hands. "I'm Emily. Daniel's wife. I know this is strange."

"It isn't strange," she said. "I've been waiting for you to call."

Rachel worked nights as a dispatcher and had two school-age boys. Her voice was tired, practical, and nothing like the bitter woman Daniel had described.

"When my oldest was born," she said, "Mom showed up with a suitcase and told the nurses I'd invited her. I hadn't. When I made her leave, she told relatives I was having a breakdown."

"Daniel said you shut her out for no reason."

Rachel laughed without humor. "Daniel believed that version because believing it was easier."

She wasn't interested in recruiting me to hate Linda. She wanted me to know how the pattern worked. First came gifts. Then favors you hadn't requested. Then accusations of cruelty if you refused. Rachel had spent years trying to explain it before learning she didn't need an audience to set rules for her own home.

"Don't make your safety depend on him understanding by Friday," she said. "Make a plan that works even if he doesn't."

I opened a bank account in my own name for my paycheck, after checking which funds were mine to move. I kept copies of financial records and scheduled a consultation with a family lawyer to understand my options, not to start a war. Mara drove me to the clinic for another checkup. Every reassuring beat from our baby's monitor made my shoulders drop a fraction.

That night Daniel arrived at Mara's carrying my favorite soup. "Can we talk?"

"Of course. But you don't get to say I'm imagining it."

He nodded, sat on the porch, and admitted his mother had asked him to pressure me into staying at her house after delivery. He said he had refused.

"When?" I asked.

He looked away.

"Daniel, when did you refuse?"

"I told her we'd see how you felt after the birth."

May you like

My phone rang before I could answer. It was Becca, whispering from Linda's house.

"Emily, please listen. She's telling everyone you're too unstable to care for a newborn."
