Chapter 6 - Not Another Word

By the time Daniel reached the lobby, Rosa had planted herself in front of Lucía like a small, furious guard dog. A hotel employee in a gray jacket stood ten feet away, pretending to straighten a vase.

"She said Harper wanted Lucía for a photograph," Rosa told him. "I told her there would be no photograph."

Lucía held up the flower basket. "The note was under my petals."

Nina photographed the paper and asked the manager to preserve the lobby cameras. Then she urged Daniel to make a police report. The threats needed an official record.

At the station, Officer Beth Malloy listened without smiling or promising miracles. She took the note, the child's account, and a list of names. "Your daughter shouldn't have to repeat this to every adult in the county," she said. "We'll arrange a trained interviewer if that's needed."

Daniel signed the report. Outside, Lucía asked, "Is Harper going to jail because I talked?"

"That's not for you to decide," he said. "And it isn't your job to protect grown-ups from consequences."

At Rosa's house they made grilled-cheese sandwiches, though no one wanted much dinner. Daniel called the bank and revoked Harper's access to his business accounts. His manager, Cal Brooks, agreed to change the office codes before sunrise.

Then Harper called. Daniel let it go to voicemail. Her message began with tears, shifted to anger, and ended quietly.

"I know you think I'm terrible," she said. "But there's something about that night Lucía doesn't understand. Silas has something on me. Call before he uses it."

Daniel listened twice. Nina told him not to answer until they had a plan.

At midnight he checked on Lucía, curled beneath her mother's old quilt. On the dresser sat a second drawing, made before the wedding. Two adults stood in the rain. One held a blue folder above his head.

Across the folder, in letters copied with painstaking care, Lucía had written a word Daniel recognized from the guarantee.
