Chapter 20 - THE FUNERAL ELENA CHOSE

Marco returned to California under federal protection two weeks later.
He told Giovanni the final truth without asking forgiveness.
Years earlier, Marco had tried to steal from Vale's network and had triggered the chain of threats that trapped the entire family.
Elena found him alive and refused to abandon him despite what he had done.
That decision brought Vale back into her life.
Marco carried guilt, but Vale carried responsibility for Elena's murder.
Sofia survived and agreed to testify.
Rafael did the same to avoid spending the rest of his life in prison.
Teresa surrendered the shell-account records and entered protective custody.
Vale's network began collapsing one arrest at a time.
Giovanni postponed Elena's burial until every examination was complete.
Then the family held a second funeral.
This one was small.
No business partners.
No cameras.
No people pretending grief for appearances.
Only Giovanni, Emilio, Clarissa, Marco, Luca, and a handful of people Elena truly loved.
Before the coffin closed, Giovanni placed the blue music box beside her.
"You were right," he whispered.
"I would have burned the world down."
He looked at his children.
"You made sure I didn't have to."
Months later, Emilio and Clarissa returned to Cayo Lucero with Giovanni.
Not to chase another secret.
To scatter Elena's favorite white flowers from the cliff where she had found Marco alive.
Clarissa asked why their mother had trusted them with the first key instead of Giovanni.
He smiled through tears.
"Because she knew you two would look for the truth before looking for someone to punish."
Emilio glanced at the ocean.
"And you?"
Giovanni took a long breath.
"I'm learning."
Behind them, the island wind carried the music-box melody from Clarissa's phone.
For the first time since Elena died, Giovanni did not hear a warning in it.
At the second funeral, Giovanni did not sit at the head of anything.
He stood between his children and let them decide which photographs of Elena would remain beside the coffin.
Emilio chose one of her laughing on a windy beach, and Clarissa chose one of Elena asleep on the couch with all three of them piled around her.
Giovanni finally understood that the family Elena fought to save had never been the Moretti name; it was simply the people in those photographs.

He heard goodbye.
And somewhere between grief and forgiveness, the Moretti family finally stopped living inside the secrets of the dead.
