Chapter 6 - THE MAN FROM CAYO LUCERO

By sunrise, Giovanni had turned the Moretti estate into a locked compound.
Nobody entered without identification and nobody left without permission.
Emilio hated it.
Clarissa was too frightened to complain.
At breakfast, the gate camera caught an old taxi stopping outside.
A man stepped out carrying no luggage.
Giovanni recognized him from Elena's photograph.
He ordered the guards to bring him inside.
The stranger introduced himself as Rafael Sanz.
"I was your wife's attorney on Cayo Lucero."
Giovanni stared at him.
"My wife had an attorney I never knew existed?"
"She had many things you never knew existed."
Rafael placed a weatherproof case on the table.
Inside were copies of Elena's island records and a map marked with red circles.
One circle surrounded a ruined monastery on the island's northern coast.
Another surrounded a bank in Geneva.
The third surrounded Giovanni's own estate.
"What is this?"
Rafael answered, "Places Elena believed were connected to Marco's disappearance."
He then revealed that Marco had contacted Elena eleven months earlier using an old childhood code.
Marco claimed someone inside the Moretti organization had kept him hidden for years to protect a financial arrangement.
Giovanni looked at Luca.
Luca did not flinch.
Rafael opened one final envelope.
Inside was a recent photograph of Marco alive on Cayo Lucero.
On the back, Marco had written, "Tell Giovanni his wife died because she chose him over the truth."
Giovanni slammed the photograph onto the table.
Then a guard rushed in.
Rafael said Elena had spent her final night on the island arguing with Marco through a locked door because she refused to let him surrender the evidence to Vale's people.
She had left before dawn with a bruise on her wrist and no explanation.
Giovanni realized his wife had come home carrying fear she never allowed him to see.
That knowledge felt like another betrayal, but this time he knew the betrayal was his own blindness.
