Chapter 11 - The Map in the Toy Boat

Lily led Daniel into her bedroom and pulled a blue wooden toy boat from beneath the bed. One side was scratched, and the painted sail had broken years ago.

"Mommy said it was our treasure ship," she told him. "She showed me how to open the bottom."

A small panel slid free. Inside, wrapped in wax paper, lay a folded map and a letter addressed to Daniel.

He stared at Claire's handwriting until the words blurred.

Daniel, if this ever becomes a fight, don't let them call the meadow empty land. There are families downstream. Show them where the old channel runs. Love, C.

His throat tightened. Claire had written the note during the last months of her illness. She'd been tired, frightened, and still thinking about strangers whose houses might flood.

"Can I touch it?" Lily asked.

He gave her the letter. She traced the sloping C with one finger.

"She made those letters like little waves."

The certified survey marked an old storm channel and a public drainage easement through the meadow. Northline's new map put a parking structure on top of it.

Daniel photographed the packet, then put it in a protective sleeve for Mara and Aaron to examine.

"This could stop the project," Aaron said when Daniel described it by phone. "If the easement is valid, they can't just pretend it isn't there."

"Can it protect Alder Street?"

"It might be the best proof we have."

Lily sat beside Daniel on the floor as he carefully closed the toy boat.

"Does this mean Mommy saved everybody?"

"Not by herself," he said. "But she gave us a way to try."

His phone buzzed with a message from Mara.

A motion had just been filed in probate court asking to suspend Daniel's authority as trustee.
