Chapter 16 - Trucks at the Gate

At five thirty, two trucks idled outside the meadow gate. Workers in reflective vests studied a plan in the morning mist.

Daniel watched from the road with Aaron and Officer Walsh. Lily was safely at home with Nora and June.

Mara had spent the night preparing an emergency request to stop any entry or alteration until the disputed easement could be reviewed. The duty judge had granted a temporary hold shortly before dawn.

Walsh approached the crew supervisor and showed him the order. The engines were shut off.

Then Grant Vale stepped from a black SUV.

"This is a private commercial agreement," he told Daniel. "You're embarrassing yourself."

"You put my name on a deed I never signed."

"Prove it."

"I intend to. In court."

Grant's smile looked rehearsed. "Vanessa was right about you. You'd sacrifice an entire project just to avoid admitting your daughter needs help."

Daniel took one step forward, then stopped. He could hear Mara's advice: don't let them turn your anger into their evidence.

"My daughter is seven," he said. "She isn't a bargaining chip."

Grant looked toward the meadow. "Your late wife understood the economics. She almost sold it herself."

"Claire wouldn't have sold people downstream into a flood."

"You might be surprised what she signed near the end."

Grant got back into his SUV. The trucks remained parked outside the gate while the officer documented the scene.

On the way home, Aaron called Daniel.

"I checked Claire's old project correspondence. Someone requested her signature file from the county archive last year."

"Who?"

"A contractor account tied to Northline."

Daniel thought of the copied signatures, the fake clinical report, and Vanessa teaching Lily to fear her own father.

They hadn't just rewritten a development plan.

They were about to rewrite Claire's final wishes.
