“Grandpa…” she sobbed. “Dad told her I’m the housekeeper’s daughter.”

Cesare slowly turned toward his son.

Julian moved in front of Vanessa instead of going to his child.

“Dad… don’t make this public.”

Then Ethan grabbed Cesare’s shoulder and swung.

Cesare slipped the punch and drove one explosive counterpunch across Ethan’s face.

Ethan spun backward into the rolling costume trunk.

The trunk shot across the floor. Its lid burst open as garment bags, folded costume fabric, and lightweight masks scattered everywhere. Ethan crashed through two portable prop columns and dropped beneath the wreckage.

Vanessa grabbed Elsie’s cardigan and tried to drag her toward the exit.

Cesare ripped her hand away and slapped her hard across the face.

Vanessa spun backward into the acoustic-panel stack.

The padded panels folded over each other as backdrop fabric collapsed around her and she dropped against the rehearsal bench.

Cesare looked directly at Julian.

“You hid my granddaughter to impress this woman. You’re finished.”

Julian’s face went white.

But as Cesare bent to retrieve the two torn halves of Elsie’s paper flower, he noticed something strange.

The child had made it from an old sheet of paper.

And beneath one crayon-colored petal was a faint blue financial stamp.

Ethan saw it too.

For the first time, he no longer looked angry.

He looked afraid.
