Chapter 18 - THE LAST RECORDING

Julian went still.

Cesare turned toward him.

"What does she mean?"

"I don't know."

Lauren was brought down in handcuffs. She looked terrified now that Vanessa was nowhere near her.

"Ask him about Project Mariner," she said.

Marta's face changed.

"Julian?"

Julian closed his eyes.

Cesare's voice dropped. "Tell me."

"Two years ago, I created a confidential acquisition fund," Julian said. "Project Mariner. I wanted to buy distressed waterfront properties before competitors knew Bellini was involved."

"Did you tell the board?"

"No."

"Did you use legacy approval codes?"

Julian hesitated.

That was answer enough.

Marta looked furious. "You reopened a retired authorization channel."

"For six weeks. Then I shut it down. Vanessa knew because she was helping with investor relations."

Cesare understood the final piece.

Julian had opened the door.

Vanessa and Ethan had walked through it.

Lauren nodded. "She copied the structure. Ethan changed the vendor names. They used Julian's old Mariner files as the template."

"Why kidnap Elsie?" Cesare asked.

"Vanessa said if the ledger survived, she needed leverage to force Julian to take responsibility."

Julian looked at his daughter.

His arrogance was now visible in the ribbon marks around his daughter's wrists.

Police recovered the scattered pages.

One officer also found a small digital recorder inside Lauren's bag.

Lauren's shoulders dropped.

"Vanessa made me record every meeting. She trusted nobody."

The lieutenant pressed play.

Vanessa's voice came first.

"If the board vote fails, Julian takes the fall. If he fights, use the child. He'll fold."

Ethan laughed in the background.

Then another voice spoke.

Julian's.

"I don't care what you do with the paperwork. Just make sure my father never knows I restarted Mariner."

Elsie stared at him.

"Dad?"

May you like

Julian's face emptied.

Because this time, there was no Vanessa to blame.
