Chapter 1 - The Glass I Broke

"DON'T DRINK THAT, MICHAEL!"

I hit his wrist before the champagne touched his lips. The crystal glass flew from his hand and burst across the marble, spraying gold liquid over Vanessa Bellini's twelve-thousand-dollar gown. Forty-six guests turned toward the sound. For one breath, no one moved.

Then Vanessa slapped me so hard my cheek burned.

"You stupid little servant. Do you understand what you've done?"

I was twenty-five, a server at the Moretti estate in Chicago. I'd interrupted the engagement toast of Luca Moretti, thirty-six, whose name alone frightened people. His younger brother Michael stood beside me, pale as paper.

"I watched her put something in his glass," I said.

Vanessa raised her voice. "She's lying. Security!"

"Nobody moves," Luca said.

Everyone heard him.

Michael looked down at the spill. "It wasn't cider?"

"I don't think so." My voice shook. "And you haven't had alcohol in three hundred seventeen days."

That number wasn't something I'd invented to win a fight. Michael had written it on the kitchen calendar that morning. Every day mattered to him. He'd told my father, a former Moretti driver, that Luca had kept a place for him at the family table through his worst drinking years. Michael carried a graduation photo inside his phone case.

Vanessa moved to stand between us. "You embarrassed him in front of everyone. That's what you've done."

Michael straightened. "I'm not embarrassed I quit drinking."

Luca put one hand on his brother's shoulder. "Neither am I. Emily, tell me exactly what you saw."

"At eight forty, Vanessa spoke to the bartender. Later I saw her pour a clear liquid into Michael's flute. I smelled it when she carried the tray past me. It wasn't apple cider."

The bartender, Leo, stared at his shoes. Vanessa's phone lit up on the table, screen facing me. I couldn't read the sender's name, but I saw the message.

DID HE DRINK IT?

Vanessa snatched the phone away. Luca saw her do it.

"Give me one reason," he said softly, "why someone needs to know whether my brother took that sip."

And Vanessa, who always seemed to have an answer ready, said nothing.
