Chapter 16 - The Baby's Name

The specialist explained the condition plainly. The baby had a rare blood disorder that could cause complications during delivery, but it was treatable. With regular monitoring and a planned hospital birth, the outlook was good.
The old report had been altered to remove the warning and delay care. The new test also confirmed that the sample taken after Daniel's death had been mislabeled. Someone had tried to create confusion about the baby's parentage.
Clara let out a long breath.
"So my baby is Daniel's?"
The doctor nodded. "The genetic results are consistent with the records."
Vincent looked at the family chart. Daniel's paternity had been confirmed through Anthony's preserved sample. The baby was his niece or nephew, a direct descendant of the Moretti line.
But the doctor added one more thing. The baby was a girl.
Clara smiled through tears. "Daniel wanted a daughter. He said he'd teach her to fix a flat tire and never let her believe she had to be quiet to be loved."
Vincent asked what she planned to name her.
"Elena," Clara said. "After the woman Daniel saved. And because I want my daughter to know the truth about the women who came before her."
The trust attorney confirmed that the unborn child had a future claim under the family trust, but Clara would control any decision on the child's behalf. Vanessa and Victor had no legal authority over her medical care or inheritance.
Clara asked the doctor to explain the condition again, slowly, until she could repeat the plan herself. She would not let fear turn her into a passenger in her own life. The baby kicked once beneath her palm, and she laughed through the tears.
That evening, a guard found the mansion's side gate open.
