Chapter 16 - HIS LAST LIE
They found Mark twenty minutes later in the hospital parking garage.
He had been sitting in his car since before dawn.
He claimed he came to stop his mother.
Police asked why he hadn't warned anyone that Robert might be involved.
Mark said he didn't know.
Then they searched his phone.
There was a deleted message recovered from the night before.
MOM: Robert will handle the hallway. You just need to keep Rachel calm until I get there.
MARK: This is insane.
MOM: Then stop me.
There was no reply.
No warning to police.
No warning to me.
He had done what he always did.
Nothing.
And this time, doing nothing had put our newborn daughter at risk.
Maya filed an emergency request the same afternoon regarding temporary custody and supervised contact.
I hated that my first day as a mother included affidavits.
I hated that Emma's birth announcement to her father happened through lawyers.
But when Mark finally saw her through the nursery window with a security officer beside him, I watched from down the hall.
He pressed his hand to the glass.
He looked shattered.
For one dangerous second, I remembered who he had been before all this.
The man who painted the nursery at midnight because I couldn't sleep.
The man who held my hair through morning sickness.
The man I loved.
Then I remembered the knife photo.
The signatures.
The silence.
Love did not erase evidence.
The next morning, a judge granted me temporary primary custody and ordered Mark's visits supervised pending further review.
When I left the hospital, Olivia carried my bag.
I carried Emma.
Outside, reporters had gathered because Diane's arrest had become local news.
Cameras turned toward me.
Someone shouted, "Rachel, do you forgive your husband?"
I kept walking.
Then another voice yelled, "Did he help plan the hospital incident?"
I stopped.
Because behind the reporters, Mark was standing on the sidewalk.
May you like
And for the first time, he said loudly enough for everyone to hear:
"Yes. I helped her."
