Chapter 18 - ONE LAST REQUEST

"No."

I said it before the prosecutor finished explaining.

"I understand," she said. "You are under no obligation."

Diane's attorney tried again through Maya.

Then through Mark.

Then through a handwritten letter I never opened.

No.

For months, Diane had treated my boundaries like insults. Now my boundary was a locked door.

She would not meet Emma.

She would not hold Emma.

She would not turn my daughter into the ending of her fantasy.

At sentencing, I gave a victim-impact statement.

My knees shook when I stood.

Diane sat ten feet away in a gray suit.

I looked directly at her.

"You called me weak because I cried," I said. "You called me unstable because I was afraid. You mistook my need to be loved for permission to control me. Then you threatened my child. That was your mistake."

Her expression finally cracked.

I continued.

"You did not save my daughter. You endangered her before she took her first breath. And you did not destroy me. You introduced me to the version of myself who knows how to say no."

The judge imposed a sentence that included incarceration followed by strict no-contact conditions. The fraud cases carried consequences of their own.

Outside court, Mark approached Maya first and asked permission to speak to me.

I agreed to one minute.

"I signed the divorce papers," he said.

"I know."

"I also signed the parenting plan. Supervised visits until the court says otherwise."

I nodded.

He looked toward the stroller but didn't step closer.

That mattered.

"Can I ask one thing?"

"What?"

"Do you hate me?"

I thought about it.

"No," I said. "Hate would keep you too close."

I walked away.

That night, while Emma slept, someone knocked on Olivia's door.

My body reacted before my mind did.

I grabbed my phone.

Olivia checked the camera.

May you like

Then she smiled.

"Rachel," she said. "I think you're going to want to see this."
