Chapter 13 - Leo’s Drawing

They found a photograph of the drawing in Leo’s preschool file.

His teacher had scanned everything before sending originals home.

Crayon.

Messy.

A black car.

Clara sat beside Leo with a fresh box of crayons.

She did not show him the old drawing.

“Want to draw cars?”

“Yes.”

He drew the black car first.

“Who’s red?”

“Paul.”

“And bird?”

He drew a tall figure behind the car.

“Bird man.”

“Vittorio?”

“Bird man.”

Then he added something nobody understood.

“What’s that?”

“Mommy box.”

Rico whispered:

“The red ledger?”

“No. Mommy box.”

“Did Mommy give the box to Bird Man?”

“No.”

“Did Bird Man take it?”

Then drew a line from the gray box to a house.

A small house with a cross.

“The family mausoleum.”

Vittorio had managed burial arrangements after Elena’s death.

He had access to the mausoleum alone.

Detectives searched with a warrant.

Behind a loose stone near the Moretti crypt, they found a metal document box.

Inside were the original Harbor ledger.

Elena wrote:

If you’re reading this, I need you to understand something before you decide who to destroy.

Vittorio is guilty of keeping the old system alive. I believe he will threaten me. I do not know how far he will go.

Then:

But Rico, the bigger danger is the family habit of silence.

Your mother knew I was afraid.

Matteo knew Harbor was dirty.

Dante knew Vittorio was bypassing controls.

I knew you were carrying too much and chose not to tell you.

We all protected one another with silence until silence became protection for the wrong person.

If we survive this, change that.

If I don’t, change it anyway.

At the bottom Elena had added:

Children notice the room adults have decided not to see.

Then Dante entered.

“Vittorio called.”

Rico stood.

“What does he want?”

May you like

Dante looked at Clara.

“He wants to speak to Leo.”
