Chapter 16 - Clara’s Choice

Three weeks became two months.

Clara stopped working regular shifts at Il Destino.

Rico paid her more than she had ever earned.

She still refused the title of nanny.

“What are you, then?” Dante asked.

“Temporary problem.”

She protected that boundary.

One afternoon Clara received a call from her landlord.

The building was being sold.

“I have an apartment.”

“No.”

“You don’t even know what I was going to say.”

“Yes, I do.”

“A vacant staff apartment over the carriage house.”

“No.”

“Market rent.”

“No.”

“You enjoy making everything difficult.”

“I enjoy not owing you my life.”

Later he came back with paperwork.

“Better.”

“Terrifying.”

She moved in because it solved a problem, not because she had become part of a fantasy.

The criminal case developed.

Vittorio’s lawyers attacked Elena’s credibility.

Called her notes incomplete.

Suggested Vanessa Cortez had manipulated records.

Suggested Leo’s memories were unreliable.

They were right about one thing.

Leo was not evidence in the adult sense.

Rico refused to let prosecutors use him as a performance.

“No courtroom.”

Elena’s documents, Paul’s testimony, bank records, and digital messages would have to stand on their own.

Clara respected Rico for that.

Then Vanessa Cortez disappeared from the clinic.

A note on her bed:

Dante found her twelve hours later at a bus station.

Vittorio’s attorney had subpoenaed her records.

The thought of public testimony broke her.

Vanessa needed a lawyer, trauma support, and choices.

Slowly, he was becoming a man who could.

Then one evening Leo handed Clara a drawing.

“Who’s this?”

Leo pointed to a fourth figure at the edge.

“Mommy’s here too?”

“Not gone.”

Clara almost corrected him.

Children did not mean death the way adults did.

“Here.”

Clara’s eyes filled.

Rico stood in the doorway.

He had heard.

And this time grief did not knock him down.

It simply sat beside him.
