Chapter 19 - Ordinary Things

Dinner happened at a tiny Mexican restaurant in Queens.
No private room.
No security at the table.
Rico looked uncomfortable for ten minutes.
Then normal.
Clara discovered he hated cilantro.
He discovered she stole fries without asking.
They did not talk about forever.
At home, Leo slept through the night.
His therapist said recovery was visible not in the absence of fear but in the return of curiosity.
Why Grandma Carmela talked with her hands.
Why Mommy could not come home.
That last question arrived at breakfast.
Clara did not answer for him.
“Because Mommy died.”
“Forever?”
“Yes.”
No one changed the subject.
No one said Mommy was sleeping.
No one promised she would come back.
It also gave the hurt a shape.
Later Leo asked:
“Mommy here?”
“In the ways we remember her.”
Leo accepted that for the moment.
Children revisited grief like rooms.
Clara finished her first semester with straight A’s.
Rico wanted to throw a party.
Dante started calling her Professor.
The Moretti businesses changed too.
No family member could override security logs alone.
Carmela hated the paperwork.
Rico loved that she hated it.
Elena’s foundation expanded support for families affected by violence.
Not branded with Rico’s name.
Then Il Destino hosted a small memorial dinner one year after Elena’s death.
Clara returned in a black dress instead of an apron.
“Still think you can tell the owner what to do?”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
At the same table where Leo once screamed, the boy sat with crayons.
He did not ask if Leo was okay five times.
He let his son recover from one loud sound by himself.
That might have been the hardest thing Rico had ever done.
Then Leo held up his picture.
Nobody said what the picture meant.
Then Leo added one more thing.
A big red heart around all four.
Leo frowned.
“Daddy crying again.”
Clara smiled.
“He does that now.”
May you like
Rico glared at her.
“Apparently.”
