Chapter 20 - The Hand He Chose Again

Two years after the night at Il Destino, Leo Moretti walked into the same restaurant holding his father’s hand.

He was five.

Tall for his age.

Serious about dinosaurs.

Suspicious of broccoli.

He no longer screamed when strangers approached.

He still disliked sudden touch.

Clara waited near the front table.

She had completed her degree and now worked with a nonprofit program supporting young children after family trauma.

But she was not there because Rico paid her.

That had ended a year earlier.

Rico crossed the marble floor.

“Late.”

“Three minutes.”

“Late.”

“I had a board meeting.”

“Sounds tragic.”

Leo released Rico’s hand and ran to Clara.

Then stopped one foot away.

“Can I hug you?”

“Yes.”

“You taught him that.”

“No.”

“We all did.”

A business argument at another.

Someone dropped a plate in the kitchen.

Leo looked toward the sound.

Clara remembered the first shattered plate.

A little hand around one finger.

After dessert, Rico took something from his pocket.

“If that’s a ring, I’m leaving.”

“It’s not.”

“Good.”

“It’s a key.”

“To what?”

“The old Elena study.”

Clara’s expression softened.

Rico had turned the room into a reading space for Leo.

But the room no longer sat frozen in grief.

“Leo wants you to have one.”

“In case book emergency.”

“That’s reasonable.”

Outside, Brooklyn traffic moved under wet streetlights.

They walked toward the car.

At the curb Leo took Clara’s hand.

Two years earlier, Rico Moretti believed power meant controlling every danger before it reached the people he loved.

Elena’s death destroyed that illusion.

Leo’s grief destroyed what remained of it.

Clara had not fixed either of them.

She had done something smaller.

Rico had learned to do the same.

Leo squeezed both their hands.

“Warm milk when we get home?”

“You make it.”

“I own four restaurants.”

“And somehow this is still difficult for you.”

Then he looked down at his son.

“Okay. Warm milk.”

Leo swung their hands between them.

The first night they met, he had reached for Clara because everyone else had tried to control his fear.

Now he reached for both of them because nobody was asking him to choose.

And for the first time since Elena died, Rico understood the one thing power had never been able to give him.

Not control.

Not obedience.

Trust.

The hand Leo chose had never been a miracle.

It had been an invitation.

This time, Rico knew how to accept it.
