Chapter 16 - THE HEARING

The emergency hearing was not dramatic the way television makes courtrooms dramatic.
Nobody shouted.
Nobody pounded a table.
That made it worse.
Facts entered the room quietly and stayed there.
Rebecca presented the forged school authorization, the false clinical letters, the blocked contacts, the security logs, the prepaid phones, and the trust documents.
Vanessa's attorney argued that many actions were misguided attempts to manage a difficult blended family.
Then the judge watched thirty seconds of the backyard video.
Vanessa's voice filled the courtroom.
Daniel knows what I tell him.
The judge stopped the video.
"Mrs. Cole, did you organize this event?"
Vanessa looked at her lawyer.
"Yes."
"Did you authorize adults to restrain the child with ribbon?"
"It was decorative."
"Did you pour water over her?"
"It was a game."
"Did the child consent?"
Vanessa hesitated.
That hesitation was louder than any answer.
The court extended the no-contact order and barred Vanessa from making decisions regarding Lily, her school, or her trust while the investigation continued.
I should have felt relief.
Instead, Vanessa turned as she left and looked directly at Lily, who sat beside Jenna in the back row.
She mouthed something.
Lily went pale.
Outside, I crouched in front of her.
"What did she say?"
Lily shook her head.
"You can tell me."
"She said, 'He'll find out.'"
"Find out what?"
Lily began crying.
"The thing I did."
I felt my heart drop.
"What thing?"
She wiped her face.
"The night before Mom's necklace disappeared, I broke something in your office."
"What did you break?"
Her answer stunned me.
May you like
"The little camera on your desk."
I had never owned a camera on my desk.
