Chapter 15 - The Video We Didn't Play

On the screen, Carlo sat in his study six years earlier.

"My brother believes loyalty gives him permission to destroy anyone who threatens the family business. He is wrong."

Salvatore shouted for the screens to be turned off.

Nobody moved.

Carlo continued.

"The medical network is only part of it. The political money is worse."

Senator Ward stood.

"This is fabricated."

Vanessa looked at him.

"Sit down, Dad."

He stared at her.

Then sat.

Carlo named shell companies.

Shipping accounts.

Consulting firms.

Campaign committees.

Every family at the head table appeared somewhere.

Then Carlo said, "I have given duplicate records to someone Salvatore will never suspect because he thinks she is decorative."

The screen changed.

A younger woman appeared beside Carlo.

Adrian whispered, "Aunt Sofia."

Sofia Moretti had disappeared from family life after Carlo died.

Everyone said she moved to Italy.

The video ended with a location.

A law office in Boston.

Then the ballroom lights came back on.

Salvatore was gone.

So was Malcolm Sterling.

Marco received a call.

"Two vehicles leaving the garage."

Adrian looked at me.

"Stay here."

"No."

"Liya—"

Mara cut in.

"She stays with us. You go."

Adrian and Marco left with security.

The five women stayed around me.

Vanessa's father tried to leave.

She blocked him.

"Not this time."

Federal agents entered three minutes later.

Mara had arranged subpoenas to be served as soon as the public evidence appeared.

Then my phone rang.

Mom.

I answered.

"Liya, there are men outside the residence."

My blood went cold.

"Lock the door."

"Already did."

Then I heard glass break through the phone.

May you like

Mom whispered:

"I think Salvatore knows Carlo's sister is here.
