Chapter 13 - The Brother Nobody Mentioned

Michael Mitchell was twenty-eight and nearly invisible online.
No executive profile.
No engagement photos.
No company biography.
Yet public records showed he controlled three LLCs tied to the Atlanta land.
Vanessa's younger brother was the legal owner of the properties George had pledged to multiple lenders.
If the fraud collapsed, Michael would be the name on the documents.
George had built himself an escape hatch using his own son.
Patricia had helped.
Vanessa had been told the only way to save Michael was to marry Ethan and secure Carter Meridian's financing before the duplicate liens were discovered.
That did not excuse her.
But it explained the fear behind Patricia's whisper.
If that old woman gets involved, everything falls apart.
I was not simply a difficult mother.
I was the person whose signature could stop the loan.
Federal investigators were now involved. Nina handed them our records.
Then we found Michael.
He was staying at a motel outside Memphis under his middle name.
Ethan and I did not go.
Investigators did.
Michael agreed to cooperate.
He claimed his father had tricked him into signing property documents by calling them tax forms.
"I was stupid," he said in a recorded interview. "But I wasn't trying to steal anything."
Then he produced a flash drive George had ordered him to destroy.
It contained spreadsheets listing every lender, every appraisal, and every false valuation.
One column was labeled EXIT.
Next to Carter Meridian it read:
MARRIAGE / ETHAN C.
I stared at the screen for a long time.
My son's engagement had been listed as a financing strategy.
Then investigators opened another file on the drive.

It was a photograph of Martin Sloane, alive, sitting in the back seat of a black SUV.
The timestamp was three hours after police found blood in his abandoned car.
