Chapter 16 - CLAIRE'S TRUTH

Vanessa crossed the room before anyone could stop her.

She fell into her mother's arms.

Some reunions deserve privacy.

Then Claire faced me.

"I'm sorry."

"For saving my life?"

"For disappearing after."

"You had reasons."

"So did Nathan."

That landed.

Claire was right.

Reasons explain.

They do not erase.

She gave me Evelyn's founder book.

My mother had documented every original ownership decision.

Every emergency authority.

Every warning about concentrating power inside one family.

One paragraph was underlined.

NO FOUNDER SHOULD BECOME THE COMPANY.

"I ignored that."

"We all did."

She told us the truth about her fall.

Pike confronted her after she helped me escape.

They fought in a hotel stairwell.

She fell one level and suffered a head injury. Pike left believing she was dead.

A hotel worker called an ambulance under a wrong name because Claire carried false papers used in my escape.

By the time her memory returned, Nathan had announced both my death and hers as separate tragedies.

She stayed hidden because Pike was monitoring Vanessa.

"Why activate now?"

"Because Rachel found me."

Rachel had spent years tracing old clinic payments.

She found Claire six months ago.

Together they prepared the audit trigger.

"You could have called me."

"Yes."

That was all.

No defense.

I recognized the pain.

Being protected by lies still feels like abandonment.

Then Claire opened the founder book to a final sealed page.

Evelyn had created a contingency none of us knew.

If two founder authorities returned after fraudulent death declarations, Bellmont Resorts could be forced into independent stewardship for five years.

No family executive control.

No automatic inheritance.

Professional trustees.

Employee representation.

Outside audit.

"You can take the company away from all of us."

"Not take it away."

"Then what?"

"Stop letting it belong to us."

That idea scared me more than Nathan ever had.

Because revenge was simple.

Control was familiar.

Letting go was not.

Then Ethan knocked.

Nathan had requested to see me from the hospital.

Alone.

"He says there's one thing Pike never told you."

"What?"

"The yacht explosion wasn't meant to kill you."

May you like

"Then who was it meant to kill?"

"Claire."
