Chapter 19 - The Trip We Chose

A year after the Christmas disaster, Emma and I finally went to Disney World.
Not because Grandma bought it.
Not because somebody felt guilty.
Because we planned it together.
Emma saved $163 in her Adventure Fund. I told her she could keep every dollar for souvenirs.
She chose the hotel, made a ride list, and changed it twelve times.
On our first morning, we stood in front of Cinderella Castle before the crowds got heavy.
Emma stared up at it.
“Mom?”
“Yes?”
“I thought I’d be sad here.”
“Are you?”
She shook her head.
“No. It feels different because nobody had to pick me.”
I swallowed.
“You never needed to be picked, baby.”
She took my hand.
Behind us, a family posed for pictures. Somewhere a toddler screamed about a balloon. Music floated over Main Street.
Life went on.
I took a photo of Emma in front of the castle.
I did not send it to Mom.
I did not post a caption about revenge.
The trip was not for them.
That was the point.
Later Emma bought a small silver keychain shaped like a castle.
“For Grandma Evelyn,” she said.
“You never met her.”
“I know. But she sounds cool.”
I laughed.
“She was.”
That night, as fireworks started, Emma leaned against me.
“Best trip ever?” I asked.
She grinned.
“Top three.”
“What are the other two?”
“New York. And the weekend we stayed home and made pancakes for dinner.”

I laughed until I cried.
Turns out belonging had never required a ticket.
