Chapter 14 - The Wrong Envelope

Evelyn knew where Henry had kept the original trust ledger: the ninth shelf of the pump-room records chamber.

The county had opened that chamber during its investigation, and Ellis arranged a supervised inspection with the forensic team.

Mark, Hannah, and Evelyn entered beneath the garden through the old service cellar, wearing helmets and carrying flashlights.

The air smelled of wet stone and rust.

Nine metal shelves lined the far wall.

Eight held empty wooden boxes.

On the ninth stood a narrow iron case secured by a combination dial.

Mark took out Claire's first card.

12-4-9.

The dial clicked open.

Inside was an envelope marked ORIGINAL CHARTER and a handwritten ledger listing the spring's assets and trust payments.

"We found it," Hannah whispered.

The relief lasted less than a minute.

Back upstairs, Ellis had the envelope photographed, labeled, and sealed into an evidence bag.

While Mark called Samir, a man in a county maintenance vest wheeled a cart past the temporary command station.

The officer guarding the sealed records stepped aside to answer an urgent radio call.

The cart rolled out the door.

Minutes later, Ellis opened the evidence case and went white.

The original envelope was gone.

In its place lay a photocopy of an unrelated mortgage.

Security footage showed the maintenance worker removing his cap as he left.

It was Mark's cousin Daniel, the one person who'd offered to help them search the estate that morning.

Mark called him.

Daniel answered on the first ring.

"I'm sorry," he said. "They told me they'd take my kids if I didn't do it."

Then he hung up.
