Chapter 14 - THE PAGE DANIEL SIGNED

Daniel remembered signing a stack Rachel had called school insurance forms three months earlier. He had been late and signed where she pointed.

Now Dana showed him a scanned document from Peter Sloan’s office.

His genuine signature appeared on the final page of a trust amendment.

The first pages were different from what he remembered.

“What does it do?” Daniel asked.

Dana read it carefully.

“If you are declared temporarily incapacitated or unfit to act for the children, Rachel becomes interim guardian and co-trustee pending court review.”

“How much control?”

“Enough to approve distributions for housing, education, therapy, and child-related expenses.”

Daniel thought of the forged receipts.

“She was building a pipeline.”

Dana nodded. “And building a case to trigger it.”

The emergency hearing was postponed after Dana filed evidence of fraud and coercion. A judge issued temporary no-contact orders protecting Noah and Lily while the investigation continued.

Daniel felt relief and shame at once.

That night, he sat on Noah’s floor.

“I need to tell you something,” he said.

Noah looked up from a puzzle.

“I signed a paper without reading it. Rachel used that. This is not your fault. But I made it easier for her to hurt us because I was rushing all the time.”

Noah pushed a puzzle piece into place.

“Are you going back to work tomorrow?”

Daniel hesitated.

“No.”

“Next week?”

“Some. But different.”

Noah nodded without looking convinced.

Daniel asked, “What would make you feel safe?”

Noah thought for a long time.

“Knowing when you’re coming home.”

It was such a small request Daniel nearly broke.

“I can do that.”

Noah finally looked at him.

“And if plans change, tell me yourself. Not Aunt Rachel.”

“I will.”

From the hallway, Lily called, “Daddy?”

Daniel went to her room.

She was holding her stuffed rabbit.

“I found something,” she said.

Inside the rabbit’s torn seam was a folded receipt.

On it was Peter Sloan’s name.

And a payment from Rachel for $25,000.
