Chapter 16 - THE WITNESS

The “witness” was a former babysitter named Kelsey Ward.

She had worked three weekends that summer and quit suddenly.

Dana’s investigator found her in another city.

At first, Kelsey refused to talk.

Then she learned Rachel had accused Daniel of mistreating the children.

“That’s not what I saw,” she said.

They met in Dana’s office.

Kelsey looked nervous.

“Rachel paid me to sign a statement,” she admitted. “She said it was for a family mediation.”

“What did the statement say?” Daniel asked.

“That you yelled a lot. That Noah was scared of you. That Lily cried when you came home.”

“Was any of it true?”

“You yelled once because Lily ran toward the pool. Noah was scared because Rachel told him he’d be sent away if he didn’t behave. And Lily cried when you came home because Rachel had taken away her rabbit and told her she couldn’t ask you for it.”

Daniel clenched his jaw.

“Why did you sign?”

Kelsey looked ashamed. “I needed money.”

“How much?”

“Five thousand.”

Kelsey continued.

“But I didn’t quit because of you.”

He turned.

“I quit because I saw Rachel pull Lily by the arm. Hard. I told her I was going to tell you.”

“What happened?”

“She said you already knew. Then she showed me a text from your number saying, ‘Stay out of family discipline.’”

Daniel felt the same cold anger he had felt reading Noah’s tablet.

Kelsey wiped her eyes.

“I believed it.”

Dana asked, “Do you still have the text?”

Kelsey nodded.

“On my old phone.”

That message became another piece of the pattern.

But the real break came the next morning.

Detectives executed a search warrant on Peter Sloan’s office.

They found draft petitions, forged receipts, scanned signatures, and a folder marked BROOKS.

Inside was a handwritten timeline.

At the very bottom, after the planned guardianship hearing, was one final line:

DANIEL — FITNESS EVALUATION / REMOVE TRUST CONTROL.

And beside it, in Rachel’s handwriting:

BEFORE JUNE 30 OR DEBT DEFAULTS.
