Chapter 14 - The Blue Room

The house sat empty behind overgrown hedges.
Federal agents entered first.
Daniel followed with Evan and Vanessa.
The blue bedroom was still blue.
Not freshly painted.
The same faded wallpaper stars Daniel remembered from childhood remained near the ceiling.
Vanessa whispered, "She preserved it."
"No," Daniel said. "She preserved something in it."
They measured the walls.

Daniel looked at Thomas.

Thomas nodded slowly.
"He tried."
"Tried?"
The final amendment was never filed.

Official cause: heart attack.
Evan looked at the date.
Then at Patricia's travel records.
She had been in Nashville that night.
A floorboard creaked downstairs.
Agents shouted.
A door slammed.
Daniel ran to the landing.
A woman in a dark coat was racing through the back garden.

"Mom.
