Chapter 19 - What His Father Left Behind

Asset recovery took almost a year.

The recovered funds became the subject of a fight Daniel refused to turn into another family war.

He made one proposal.

First, repay employees and investors directly harmed by the Stellan Dynamics collapse.

Second, compensate Martin Keene's estate for the portion of blame falsely placed on him, while acknowledging his documented participation.

Third, create an independent restitution fund for families whose pensions and jobs were damaged.

No Stellan family member would control it.

Thomas cried when Daniel told him.

"Your father would've been proud."

Daniel shook his head.

"I don't need to know that anymore."

Robert had made a terrible choice.

Then tried to fix it.

Then hid too much.

Then left his son a trail instead of a clean confession.

Daniel would not repeat that part.

He wrote Lily a letter.

Not for now.

For when she was old enough to ask why her third birthday appeared in court records.

He wrote everything plainly.

Vanessa lied about who she was when she met him.

She later loved him.

She also treated Lily cruelly on one frightened evening.

Both truths mattered.

Thomas loved Robert and made a reckless choice that may have contributed to his death.

Both truths mattered.

Daniel's grandfather built a company and stole from it.

Both truths mattered.

People did not become simple because a story needed a hero or villain.

But accountability could still be simple.

Tell the truth.

Repair what you can.

Stop asking children to carry adult secrets.

On the anniversary of Robert's death, Daniel visited the cemetery alone.

He placed no flowers.

He only stood there and said, "I know now."

His phone buzzed.

A message from Mrs. Hargrove.

LILY WANTS TO KNOW IF HER BIRTHDAY CAKE CAN HAVE DINOSAURS THIS YEAR.

Daniel laughed.

May you like

Then another message appeared.

AND SHE SAYS NO ADULTS ARE ALLOWED TO TOUCH IT.
