Chapter 16 - The Cemetery

Police reached Rachel before Daniel.
That was good.
Daniel should not have been first.
She sat beside Laura’s grave.
No threats.
No attack.
Legal.
But concerning.
Rachel looked exhausted when officers approached.
She did not run.
“Did Daniel send you?”
They arrested her on outstanding charges related to fraud, evidence tampering, and attempted custodial interference.
The child-treatment allegations remained under investigation.
Daniel did not go to the station.
He stayed home.
That mattered.
An older version of him would have chased confrontation.
Now he chose the kids.
Noah asked, “Did they find her?”
“Yes.”
“Is she coming here?”
“No.”
Emma asked, “Forever?”
Daniel answered carefully.
“She is not coming here while adults decide what happens next.”
Emma seemed satisfied.
Noah was not.
“Will she go to jail?”
“Maybe.”
“Do you want her to?”
Daniel thought.
“That’s not the same.”
“No.”
His son again.
That evening, Walter came over with pizza.
Nobody ate much.
“I think we need to stop making her death the center of every decision.”
Daniel looked at him.
Walter continued.
Noah said, “She’d want us safe.”
Walter smiled.
“Probably.”
Daniel looked at his children.
“What do you want?”
Noah answered first.
“For nobody to make Emma cry.”
Emma thought longer.
That one hurt.
Daniel nodded.
“I can work on that.”
“No promises?”
Noah asked.
Daniel smiled.
“No fake promises.”
The next morning, Daniel told his business partner he was reducing field hours.
Not quitting.
Changing.
“For what?”
Daniel stared.
Again, people knew.
And waited.
He had mistaken endurance for necessity.
Then Susan called.
Rachel wanted to accept a plea agreement.
May you like
But she had one condition.
She wanted to speak to Noah before sentencing.
