Chapter 17 - Noah’s Answer

Daniel said no immediately.
Then paused.
Not because Rachel deserved anything.
Because Noah had agency too.
Megan advised against direct contact unless a therapist approved.
Tessa Moreno agreed.
So they asked Noah one question.
“Do you want to hear anything from Aunt Rachel?”
He thought.
“Like what?”
“Do I have to answer?”
“No.”
“Do I have to forgive her?”
“No.”
“Then I don’t want to talk.”
Daniel felt relief.
Noah added, “Can I write something instead?”
Megan nodded.
“If you want.”
Noah wrote for twenty minutes.
Three paragraphs.
Daniel did not read it until Noah handed it to him.
Aunt Rachel,
I loved you. I still remember when you made pancakes and took us to the zoo. I don’t know why you got mean.
I was scared to tell Dad because you said he would believe you. He didn’t believe you when he saw.
You said I should protect Emma because I’m the big brother. I did. But that was supposed to be your job too.
Daniel stopped reading.
His eyes blurred.
The final line:
I don’t want to see you right now. Please stop saying it was because you loved us.
Noah asked, “Is that mean?”
“No.”
“Will she be sad?”
“Probably.”
Noah looked down.
Daniel knelt.
“You are allowed to tell the truth even if the truth makes someone sad.”
Noah nodded.
Rachel read it.
Daniel did not care.
Because tears were no longer evidence of change.
Rachel accepted the plea.
The false reports mattered.
The child abuse findings were handled with protective orders and required treatment.
But not a movie ending.
No thunder.
No revenge speech.
Tessa sat with Daniel.
“You’re cleared.”
He exhaled.
“But.”
He looked up.
Parenting support.
Trauma counseling.
Work-life structure.
Family therapy.
Daniel nodded.
“I’ll do all of it.”
Tessa smiled.
“Good.”
It documented the first time Noah had tried to disclose concerns.
Two months earlier.
At school.

The counselor had called Daniel.
Daniel had missed the call.
