Chapter 2 - THE VOICE IN THE STUDY

Arthur rose slowly. “Who's in there?”

Diana's face changed. She stopped rubbing her jaw and looked toward the front entrance.

“Someone needs to let me leave,” she said.

“Not until the police get here.” Arthur took two steps toward the study. “Who did you bring into my house?”

“No one.”

The voice spoke again, louder this time. “We have three minutes. Check the drawer.”

Arthur tried the study handle. Locked. His grandmother's ring of keys wasn't in its usual dish. Then he saw the scrape marks on the brass plate beneath the knob.

“Arthur,” Evelyn said from the floor, “the side door.”

He caught movement through the glass at the end of the hallway: a dark figure crossing the terrace. Arthur returned to Evelyn and stayed until the paramedics arrived.

Diana reached for the fallen tulips and picked up her purse. “I'll explain everything at the station. I'm not staying here to be threatened.”

“You're staying,” said a voice behind her.

Malcolm Reed, the Sterlings' longtime house manager, had come in from the kitchen. He looked at Evelyn, then the scattered flowers, then Diana. He didn't raise his voice.

“I saw you on the foyer camera.”

Diana went still. “That camera hasn't worked in months.”

“It worked tonight.”

The police arrived with paramedics. Evelyn was taken to Baylor University Medical Center for evaluation. Officer Leah Moreno photographed the cane, the damaged door, and the bruising beginning along Evelyn's forearm. Arthur told her everything, including the punch. Diana gave an entirely different account, but when Moreno asked how she'd known the foyer camera was broken, she had no answer.

At the hospital, a doctor said Evelyn had a mild concussion and a fractured wrist. She would recover, but she needed observation. Arthur sat beside her bed, ashamed that he'd brought Diana into her home.

“I'm sorry,” he said.

Evelyn studied him. “Love can make you miss a lot. It shouldn't make you stop looking.”

His phone buzzed. Malcolm had sent a frozen frame from the hall camera: a man in a dark coat leaving the study corridor seconds before Arthur entered.

Arthur zoomed in. He recognized that face from a photograph tucked into his father's funeral program.
