Chapter 13 - A LOVE STORY WRITTEN IN ADVANCE

Arthur couldn't sleep. Diana had claimed her father was a teacher who died when she was young. The photograph showed Roland holding her just outside the frame, his wedding band visible against the toddler's sleeve. Celia Cross had raised Diana under her surname while Roland disappeared.
Arthur called Moreno before he called Diana. He handed over the photograph and cassette for authentication, then went outside and stood beneath the bare trees. He remembered Diana laughing as he fumbled with a ring box at their engagement dinner. Was any of it real?
Diana called at sunrise.
“I know you've found something,” she said.
“Are you Roland Pike's daughter?”
A sharp intake of breath. Then: “He told me your family stole everything from him.”
“Did you meet me because of that?”
“Not at first.”
Arthur waited.
“All right. Yes. I was told to get close to you. But I cared about you, Arthur. I really did.”
“Then why did you hurt my grandmother?”
“Because she wouldn't tell me where the records were. My father said she hid money from us. I thought she was lying.”
“You could have asked. You could have left.”
Diana started crying. Once her tears had moved him. Now they sounded like another trap.
“Meet me at the old conservatory,” she whispered. “I'll tell you where Roland is.”
“No. Give the address to Detective Moreno.”
“You don't understand. He has something that belongs to you.”
“Then he'll return it through the police.”
Diana hung up. Ten minutes later Arthur received a photograph of his late mother's wedding ring resting on a newspaper. The ring had disappeared from the Sterling safe years earlier.
