Chapter 1 - THE KICK THAT MISSED

The boot came at Maya Bennett’s face so fast the room gasped before she moved.
Sergeant Connor Briggs had launched the kick with all the confidence of a man who had already decided how the story ended. He was six-foot-two, broad through the shoulders, and twenty pounds heavier than Maya. Around the mat, two dozen soldiers leaned forward.
Maya shifted half a step.
WHOOSH.
Connor’s heel cut through empty air.
His momentum carried him past her. He planted hard, spun around, and found Maya already facing him.
Calm. Balanced. Hands up.
The grin disappeared from his face.
“Come on,” Connor muttered.
Maya said nothing.
He rushed her with a jab, right cross, then a low kick. She blocked the first, slipped the second, and checked the third. Connor’s frustration became visible in his breathing.
First Sergeant Owen Rourke stood beside the mat with his arms folded.
“Finish it, Briggs.”
Connor heard him.
So did Maya.
Connor charged again.
This time Maya stepped inside his reach, caught his arm, turned her hips, and sent him hard onto the mat. Before he understood what had happened, she had his wrist controlled and one knee planted beside his shoulder.
“Tap,” she said quietly.
Connor stared at the floor.
Nobody laughed now.
He tapped twice.
Maya released him immediately and stood.
Captain Evan Cole raised one hand. “Match over.”
Rourke didn’t move.
“No,” he said.
The room went still.
Maya looked at him.
Rourke’s eyes were cold.
“This is an evaluation, not a dance class. Reset.”
Captain Cole frowned. “He tapped.”
Rourke stepped closer to the mat.
“I said reset.”
Connor slowly pushed himself up, anger burning through the embarrassment on his face.
Then Rourke looked directly at Maya.
“And this time,” he said, “we don’t stop until I say we stop.”
Maya realized the fight had never been about Connor.

Someone in the room wanted her hurt.
And the second round had just become something else entirely.
