Chapter 17 - THE FOURTH NAME

The fourth name was Captain Evan Cole.

Maya stared at Park as if she had misheard.

“Cole wasn’t at my old unit.”

“He was,” Park said. “For six weeks. Temporary assignment. Three years ago.”

Maya found Cole in his office.

He closed the door when he saw her face.

“You know.”

“You were there.”

Cole sat down slowly.

“I was the junior safety officer.”

“And your name disappeared from the final report.”

“Because I signed a statement saying I saw nothing before Ruiz went down.”

Maya felt something inside her drop.

“Was that true?”

Cole looked at the floor.

“No.”

The answer hurt more than she expected.

Cole had been the first commander at Fort Meridian to step between her and Rourke.

He had backed her when it mattered.

And three years earlier, he had stayed silent.

“Why?” she asked.

“I was a brand-new lieutenant. Vance told me if I contradicted the senior NCOs, I’d be finished before my career started.”

“So you let Eli carry it.”

“Yes.”

No excuse.

No speech.

Just yes.

Cole opened a drawer and removed a sealed envelope.

“I wrote this two days after the injury. Never sent it.”

Inside was a statement describing Rourke and Vance ordering the session to continue after Ruiz tapped.

Maya looked at him.

“You kept it for three years?”

“Because I was ashamed enough not to destroy it and too afraid to submit it.”

Maya stayed angry.

“Being sorry later doesn’t make silence harmless.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

Cole met her eyes.

“I’m submitting it now. And I’m reporting my own false statement.”

That would likely end his command.

Maybe his career.

Maya felt no satisfaction.

Cole signed the new statement in front of her.

Then his phone buzzed.

He read the message.

“Command suspended Rourke and Vance.”

Maya exhaled.

Cole kept reading.

“Connor’s been ordered to appear at tomorrow’s hearing.”

“What hearing?”

Cole looked up.

“The one where Rourke says Connor, Noah, and you fabricated everything together.”

May you like

The fight had moved off the mat.

Now every witness was on trial too.
