Chapter 11 - The Hearing

On Monday, Javier Rivas arrived at the civil hearing in a navy suit and an expression that said he expected everyone else to be afraid.

I wasn't.

Not anymore.

His attorney argued that I had knowingly benefited from the loan because Mauricio's business supported our household.

Elena stood.

"Then explain why my client's signature was notarized while she was hundreds of miles away."

She presented my flight records, hotel bill, conference badge, and photographs timestamped in Monterrey.

Then Mateo explained the fabricated messages.

Finally, Elena placed the burner phone records into evidence.

Rivas's confidence disappeared.

The judge suspended enforcement of the loan and referred the forged documents for criminal investigation.

Outside the courtroom, Ofelia waited by the elevators.

"Look what you've done," she hissed.

"I didn't borrow the money."

"You could have helped."

"I did help. I gave you a home for two years."

"And reminded me every day it was yours."

"Because it was."

Her face twisted.

"Your father poisoned you against us."

"My father warned me about you."

That stopped her.

I watched the shock cross her face.

"What did he leave you?" she asked.

Too quickly.

I realized then that Ofelia knew about the desk.

The realization changed the shape of everything. Mauricio had not removed an old piece of furniture because he needed money alone. Someone had been looking for whatever my father left behind. The desk had been sold quickly, the watch pawned separately, and the hidden compartment missed only because neither of them had known exactly where to look.

My father had been dead for four years, yet his caution was still forcing them to make mistakes.

"Why did Mauricio steal it?"

She looked toward the elevator.

"Ask your dead father why he kept records he had no right to keep."

The doors opened.

Before stepping inside, she looked back at me.

"That letter isn't the only thing he hid."
