Chapter 12 - The Second Compartment

I drove straight to Camila's house.

We turned my father's desk upside down.

The first hidden compartment had held the letter.

The second took us an hour to find.

A narrow strip beneath the desktop slid loose when I pressed a brass screw.

Inside was a flash drive.

The files were old.

Bank statements. Emails. Scanned contracts.

And one audio recording.

My father's voice came first.

"You are asking me to lie to my daughter."

Then Ofelia.

"I'm asking you to protect their marriage."

"By transferring an apartment to Mauricio?"

"By giving him security. Men need to know they matter."

My father laughed once.

"If he needs my daughter's property to feel like a man, he is not ready to be her husband."

Then Mauricio's voice entered the recording.

Younger. Defensive.

"I only asked because my mother is in trouble."

Dad answered, "And you will spend your life calling her emergencies your wife's responsibility."

The recording ended there.

I sat in silence.

My father had described my marriage before I understood it myself.

I hated that he had been right. I also hated that I had spent years defending Mauricio whenever Dad grew quiet around him. I had called my father old-fashioned, suspicious, too protective. He had never once said, "I told you so." Instead, he had left evidence where I could find it only if I truly needed it.

That was so painfully like him that I had to stop reading for a minute.

Elena listened twice.

"This establishes history," she said. "Not the current fraud. But it destroys their claim that the debt problem appeared recently."

Then Mateo opened a spreadsheet from the drive.

It listed payments my father had quietly made to settle one of Ofelia's earlier loans.

At the bottom was a note.

FINAL PAYMENT. NO MORE. IF MAURICIO HIDES ANOTHER DEBT FROM LAURA, TELL HER EVERYTHING.

The date was one week before my father died.

Mauricio had been lying about money for years.
