Chapter 18 - NATHAN'S MOTHER

Margaret Cole had lived in Florida for twelve years.
Nathan had spoken to her once a month and trusted her mostly because distance had kept their relationship simple.
She flew to Chicago under police escort.
When Nathan showed her the guardianship petition, she began crying.
"I signed blank pages."
Nathan closed his eyes.
"Why?"
"Marcus said they were estate documents after your father's death."
Another person who did not ask enough questions.
But Margaret had one piece of information nobody else possessed.
Richard called her the night before he died.
"He said he was changing everything," she told Nathan. "He said if there was ever a grandchild, the child should inherit through an independent trustee. Not family. Not Marcus. Not me."
The trust in circulation was incomplete.
Richard had signed a final amendment.
Where was it?
Margaret remembered Richard mailing a copy to a bank in Wisconsin under Grace's name.
Grace stared.
"He knew where I lived."
Richard had tried one last time to protect her.
The bank found the sealed packet.
Inside was the final trust amendment.
Lily and Caleb would each receive protected shares.
No family member could control the trusts.
Marcus's entire succession scheme had been pointless if the amendment survived.
That explained why he spent years searching for it.
It also explained why Grace's apartment had been watched.
The packet contained one final letter from Richard.
Grace read it aloud.
I failed you by allowing other people to decide what Nathan should know. If my grandchild ever reads this, tell them their existence was never a problem to solve.
Lily did not understand the words.
But Nathan did.
Then Detective Ortiz entered with the final charging decision.

Marcus Hale would also be charged with the murder of Richard Cole.
And Paul Clark's death was being reopened as homicide.
