Chapter 19 - THE TRIAL

The trial lasted seven weeks.
Emma's recordings became the spine of the case.
Not because they were dramatic.
Because they were patient.
Dates.
Voices.
Doors closing.
Threats made when powerful people believed staff were invisible.
Victoria testified that Marcus supplied Richard's medication and ordered her to buy it under her name.
Daniel admitted signing documents he did not understand because fear was easier than courage.
Harold and Owen both pleaded guilty.
Financial records proved Marcus stole millions while building a private system of surveillance around Nathan's potential heirs.
Grace testified only about what happened to Lily.
Marcus's attorney asked why she continued working in Nathan's house after she suspected Victoria disliked her child.
Grace looked at the jury.
"Because poor mothers don't always get to leave the first bad room they enter. Sometimes we need evidence before anyone believes us."
Emma squeezed her hand afterward.
Marcus was convicted of murder, conspiracy, fraud, kidnapping, and multiple related offenses.
Victoria received a substantial prison sentence despite her cooperation.
Nathan did not ask for mercy.
He did not ask for revenge either.
After sentencing, reporters waited outside.
One shouted, "Mr. Cole, are you taking full custody of both children?"
Nathan stopped.
"Children are not companies. You don't take control because paperwork says you can."
He looked at Grace and Rachel.
"We are building families at the speed the children can trust us."
That night, Lily stayed at Nathan's estate for the first time by choice.
She stood in the breakfast room staring at the place where the dog bowl had been.
Nathan crouched beside her.
"Want to eat somewhere else?"
Lily shook her head.
"No."

Then she pointed at the table.
"But everybody gets a chair."
