Chapter 17 - CAROLINE RUNS

Caroline missed a court appearance.

Her phone went dark.

Her car was found at the airport.

But no flight record showed her leaving.

Nora believed she had switched vehicles.

Rachel believed she was heading for the lake house.

So did I.

Police got there first.

The house was empty.

Then Mr. Ellis noticed the attic hatch open.

Inside, officers found Caroline.

Not hiding.

Searching.

She was tearing through Grace’s stored boxes.

“For what?” Nora asked.

Caroline laughed.

“Something that belongs to my family.”

They found it before she did.

A sealed envelope addressed to Sophie.

Inside were the original preservation documents for the lake property.

And a handwritten letter from Grace’s grandmother.

This house is not valuable because of land.

It is valuable because someone you love may need a place where no one can tell her who to be.

Caroline stared at it.

Then finally broke.

“My mother left me nothing.”

There it was.

The oldest wound.

Not Sophie.

Not Grace.

Not Allison.

Caroline.

Grace’s grandmother had distrusted her years earlier after Caroline tried to pressure the family into selling another property.

Caroline had spent decades believing everyone else was chosen over her.

So she built a life around making sure she would never be left out again.

Nora said, “That explains you. It does not excuse you.”

Caroline looked at me.

“You always chose Grace.”

“She was my wife.”

“Then Sophie.”

“She is my daughter.”

“And me?”

I stared at my sister.

“You were never competing with them.”

“You made me feel like I was.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“You felt it. Then you made everyone else pay for it.”

Police arrested her on charges tied to fraud, forged documents, harassment, property conspiracy, and evidence tampering.

As they led her away, she looked at the lake house.

Not at me.

Not at Sophie’s photo.

The house.

The thing she could not have.

That was when I understood.

Some people do not want love.

May you like

They want proof they were chosen.

And if they cannot have it, they will burn the room where someone else was.
