Chapter 8 - GRACE’S SECOND LETTER

Rachel had found a scanned copy of the missing property restriction in her old files.

Attached to it was a letter Grace had written six weeks before her death.

Caroline,

Stop asking Michael about Sophie’s trust.

Stop calling the lake house “family property.”

It is Sophie’s.

Not yours.

Not Michael’s.

Not mine.

If something happens to me, do not use my daughter’s grief as an excuse to control her.

Caroline stared at the page.

“She was paranoid.”

Rachel looked at her.

“She was specific.”

Grace had also documented three incidents.

Caroline asking whether a minor beneficiary could be declared emotionally incapable of making future property decisions.

Caroline requesting copies of trustee succession language.

Caroline telling Grace that “children forget mothers faster than adults think.”

Allison covered her mouth.

I felt colder with every line.

Grace had seen this coming.

Not the exact form.

But the instinct.

Control disguised as help.

Caroline finally snapped.

“You all act like Grace was a saint.”

“No one said that.”

“She judged everyone.”

“She protected her child.”

“She kept Michael isolated from his own family.”

I stepped closer.

“No. I did that myself after she died because every conversation with you became about what I should do.”

Caroline laughed.

“You were falling apart.”

“I was grieving.”

“You were weak.”

The family word.

Weak meant sad.

Weak meant uncertain.

Weak meant someone else could decide for you.

I looked at Allison.

She was crying silently.

“Did Caroline tell you I was weak?”

Allison nodded.

“She said you needed someone strong beside you.”

Caroline’s face hardened.

“You did.”

“No,” I said. “I needed people who didn’t confuse my grief with permission.”

Rachel’s phone buzzed.

She read the message twice.

“What?”

“The court clerk just emailed.”

My stomach dropped.

“What court?”

Rachel looked at Caroline.

“She filed the emergency petition this morning.”

Allison stared at her.

“You said we weren’t filing.”

Caroline said nothing.

Rachel continued.

“And she attached a recording from last night.”

The one she had made inside my house.

May you like

Caroline had wanted me angry.

When I refused to give her enough, she filed anyway.
