I CAME TO SUNDAY LUNCH WITH FLOWERS—AND FOUND MY 78-YEAR-OLD MOTHER ON HER KNEES, PICKING COLD RICE OFF THE FLOOR WHILE THE DOG ATE FROM A CLEAN BOWL.
My brother sat at the table eating roast beef like nothing was wrong. His wife took a sip of wine and snapped, "In my house, everyone follows my rules!"
When I demanded an explanation, my brother wouldn't even look at me.
Then I noticed the bruises on Mom's wrist.
"He sees me like this every day," she whispered, trembling. "He knows everything. He just never stops them."
I was shaking with anger when Mom suddenly grabbed my arm. Her next words turned my blood cold.
"Please, Carmen... don't let them take me away tomorrow."
