Chapter 6 - The Clip Without a Beginning

The video showed me shouting, "Leave her alone!" Then it cut to Lily sobbing. There was no date and no sound from the moment before. Anyone watching would believe I had frightened my daughter.

I knew that day. Last November I'd come home early and found Mara asking Lily to repeat a line while a bright light shone in her face. Lily was crying because she couldn't remember the words. I'd ordered Mara to stop filming.

"Did anyone else see that?" Anita asked when I told her.

"Our neighbor Renee came over afterward. She heard us arguing."

"Then tell her what you've found and ask if she'll speak with investigators. Don't coach her."

Renee Park arrived at the hospital carrying a stuffed airplane for Tommy. She ran the flower shop on our corner and had known us since Lily was born.

"I remember that day," she said. "Lily came outside and asked if grown-ups could make you say things that weren't true. I told Mara the filming should stop. Mara said I didn't understand her work."

I felt the old embarrassment return. At the time I'd allowed Mara to convince me the incident was a one-time mistake. We had argued and kept moving.

"I should've called someone then," I said.

Renee shook her head. "You should've listened. You can still listen now."

By evening, Nolan's company posted a new clip. It used my kitchen argument as proof of an "unsafe home." Comments flooded the page, some threatening me, others demanding the children be taken away.

Then Renee showed me a screenshot from the campaign's oldest post. In its corner, almost hidden by the caption, was a date: four months before Mara first told me she was helping a neighborhood charity.

"How long has she been doing this?" I asked.

Renee looked miserable. "Evan, I think it started before you knew there was a camera in the house."
