Chapter 16 - A Thursday That Belonged to Her

My first regular Thursday began with pancakes at Ruth's and a meeting I canceled without apologizing for it. I drove Maya to school. In the parking lot, she checked my face as if waiting for the sentence that usually came next: I have to jump on a call.

I didn't say it.

After school we went to a bookstore. She chose a mystery novel and spent twenty minutes comparing two covers. We bought the one with a crooked lighthouse. Then we ate tacos at a place where the waitress called everybody honey and nobody had a cleaning schedule.

A book couldn't erase three months. But I could be there when Maya finished the first chapter and wanted to tell me her theory.

"I think the neighbor did it," she said.

"The neighbor hasn't even appeared yet."

"That's why she's suspicious."

For the first time in a while, she smiled without checking the room first.

At home, Kelly called on video. Maya told her about the book, then showed her the orchestra music June had helped her get. Nobody asked her to perform. Nobody told her to speak more clearly for the camera. Kelly simply listened.

The next morning, though, Principal Park called me before eight. Tiffany had come to the school claiming she was still authorized to collect Maya's belongings and speak for the family. The office had refused her access to Maya. She had left after arguing with staff.

"We followed the updated contact instructions," Park assured me. "Maya was with the counselor. She is safe."

Then he hesitated.

"Greg, she left a sealed envelope addressed to your daughter."
