Chapter 19 - The Price of Looking Away

The next months were uglier than a single courtroom victory could fix. Ricardo's company had lost money it might never fully recover. Customers asked questions. Employees worried about paychecks. Vale and Brendan faced criminal investigations, and Celeste was charged in connection with the alleged financial fraud and treatment of Arturo. None of that restored a year of trust overnight.

Ricardo filed for divorce and asked the court to keep Mia's safety at the center of every decision. He never coached her to hate her mother. He answered questions carefully, listened when she was angry, and made room for the grief neither of them could solve.

"Did Mom love Grandpa?" she asked one night.

"I don't know what she felt," Ricardo said. "I know how she treated him. And it wasn't okay."

He sold his newest truck to keep the business afloat. He replaced Brendan, brought in outside auditors, and told his crew the truth he was permitted to share. Some workers left. Others stayed. He did not blame them for either choice.

At Mercer Street, repairs began. The apartments were safe to occupy again after inspections and restoration work, and the displaced families returned one by one. Arturo insisted on helping choose the new workshop benches.

"You should rest," Ricardo told him.

"I spent months being told to sit still. Give me a pencil."

They laughed together for the first time without something terrible waiting behind it.

When the work was almost done, Arturo handed Ricardo a drawing. It was a table, long and strong, with room for twelve chairs.

"For the workshop?" Ricardo asked.

"For anybody who's ever been told there isn't a place for them."

On the back, in his careful carpenter's handwriting, was one last instruction: BUILD THIS ONE WITH ME.
