Chapter 19 - WHAT THEY PLANNED FOR MONDAY

Monday. Three hours early had saved us from a timetable I hadn't even known existed.
Investigators pieced together messages, account activity, the false authorization, and testimony from people Ryan and Vivian had assumed wouldn't speak. They found discussions about moving Mom out before I returned and pushing through the cabin transaction while she was too frightened to object.
It wasn't a single impulsive cruelty. It was a plan built out of small humiliations that no one expected anyone to question.
Vivian eventually faced charges related to the assault and the disputed documents. Ryan faced a separate investigation into financial records and his role in arranging the paperwork. Their cases took months. Arrests, charges, and court dates were not the same as convictions, and I learned to live with that difference.
Family court moved faster on the urgent questions. The twins stayed primarily with me under temporary orders. Ryan's contact remained supervised, with conditions intended to protect the children, and both parents were told to keep them out of the adult conflict.
I followed the orders even on days I wanted to scream. At one visit, Oliver brought his dinosaur. Ryan cried when he saw it. I stood outside afterward with my hands shaking, grieving the family I'd thought I'd built and the childhood my children deserved.
Mom went back to physical therapy. She asked for help when she needed it. Sometimes she still woke from dreams about the basement.
One Saturday, she invited me to the cabin. We stood on the porch where Dad had left paint drips on the railing. Her attorney had confirmed the disputed sale would not proceed, and her ownership was secure.
"I want to keep this place," she said. "But not as a shrine. I want the kids to fish here. I want to plant tomatoes."
"Then we'll get you the biggest tomato plants in the county."
She smiled. "There's something else. I wrote a letter to Ryan."

I went still. "Why?"
"Because there is one thing he still needs to hear from me."
